We see many steam flow meter failures that start with wrong sizing data. Pressure, temperature, pipe size, minimum flow, and maximum flow must be right. Steam density changes sharply with pressure. A saturated steam line at 10 bar and 184 °C needs a different calculation than superheated steam at 30 bar and 400 °C. Do not guess density. Do not rely on pipe size alone. A DN80 pipe can pass 1000 kg/h in one plant and 5000 kg/h in another because the pressure is different. Give us the normal flow and the turndown range. DP flow measurement with an orifice plate or averaging pitot tube still has a place. In large pipe sizes above DN250, a DP system is often cheaper than a vortex meter. Many plants in the Middle East already own a differential pressure transmitter and keep spare parts. DP systems also handle very high temperatures when used with remote diaphragm seals. The downside is impulse line maintenance. Wet steam, dirt, or poor installation causes blockages. Square root extraction also hurts turndown. A standard orifice plate system rarely gives accurate readings below 20 percent of max flow. For a boiler house with a DN400 steam main at 18 bar, a DP system with an averaging pitot tube and a Silver Instruments pressure transmitter may be the right choice.

A cheap orifice plate is not cheap after you add the impulse tubes, manifold, transmitter, and commissioning time. That hidden labor cost matters in small plants.


A Sizing Example for Saturated Steam at 10 bar

Assume a customer in Indonesia has a DN100 pipe, saturated steam at 10 bar and 184 °C. Minimum flow is 300 kg/h. Normal flow is 2400 kg/h. Maximum flow is 3000 kg/h.
