Corrosive Gas Flow Meter: Teflon and Stainless Steel Vapor Sensors
Quick Answer
Corrosive gas flow meters need Teflon PTFE or 316L stainless steel wetted parts. Silver Automation Instruments supplies thermal mass and Coriolis meters for chlorine, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen chloride and similar aggressive vapors. Send pipe size DN, gas type, pressure bar, temperature °C and flow range kg/h and we will return a model with price.
Why Material Selection Decides Meter Lifetime
Most flow meters fail early in corrosive gas service because the sensor body or the sensor surface reacts with the gas. Chlorine and hydrogen chloride attack standard elastomers and carbon steel. Wet chlorine is worse. Teflon PTFE lining or an all 316L stainless steel sensor body stops this attack. Silver Instruments uses PTFE coated wetted parts and 316L stainless steel bodies on our gas flow meters for these services.
In practice, a gas flow meter with a Teflon coated vapor sensor lasts 5 to 8 years on dry chlorine service. The same meter with standard stainless and no PTFE can fail in under 12 months. We have seen this on customer sites in Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
Recommended Flow Meter Types for Corrosive Gas
Thermal mass flow meters work well for corrosive gas flow in pipes from DN15 to DN100. Silver Instruments TMF-C series uses a PTFE coated vapor sensor and a 316L stainless steel body. Typical accuracy is plus or minus 1.5 percent of full scale. Output includes 4-20 mA HART and RS485 Modbus. Pressure rating is up to 40 bar and gas temperature up to 150 °C.
Coriolis mass flow meters suit corrosive gas measurement where you need plus or minus 0.2 percent of reading and direct mass output in kg/h. Silver Instruments supplies the CMF-C series for gas flow ranges from 0.5 kg/h to 3000 kg/h. Wetted parts are 316L stainless steel with optional Hastelloy C22. A Teflon lined option is available for wet chlorine and sulfur dioxide streams.
We can integrate a PT100 temperature signal for gas temperature correction on all Coriolis meters.
Specific Gas Applications We See in Southeast Asia and the Middle East
In Vietnam, a water treatment plant approached us last year for a chlorine gas flow meter. Pipe size was DN25, pressure was 4 bar, flow range was 2 to 20 kg/h. We supplied a Coriolis meter with 316L stainless wetted parts and 4-20 mA HART output. The meter has run without corrosion since installation.
A chemical distributor in Malaysia asked for a sulfur dioxide vapor flow meter for DN40 pipe. The gas temperature reaches 80 °C. We recommended a thermal mass flow meter with PTFE coated vapor sensor and stainless steel body. Output goes to a PLC through RS485 Modbus.
In the Middle East, we quote many meters for ammonia vapor in refrigeration systems. These applica

Pipe size DN and material, gas type, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, flow range in kg/h or Nm³/h, power supply 24 V DC or 220 V AC, output signal 4-20 mA HART or RS485 Modbus, and hazardous area class if any.
Installation Notes for Corrosive Gas Service
Mount the flow meter in a straight pipe section with enough upstream length. For thermal mass flow meters, 10D upstream and 5D downstream is common. For Coriolis meters, no long straight run is required because the meter measures mass directly.
Use PTFE tape or graphite gaskets on threaded connections. Do not use standard EPDM or NBR gaskets unless the gas compatibility chart allows them. A small leak in a chlorine gas line can damage nearby instruments and create a safety risk.
For liquid corrosive service, the same material rules apply. Viscosity in cP and conductivity in µS/cm decide whether an electromagnetic or oval gear flow meter is the better fit. Gas applications need Teflon and stainless steel vapor sensors instead.
FAQ
Is Teflon suitable for all corrosive gas flow meters?
PTFE Teflon resists most acids, chlorine, sulfur dioxide and wet halogens. It is not suitable for alkali metals and some fluorine compounds at high temperature.
What does 316L stainless steel handle in gas service?
316L works for ammonia, dry chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and many hydrocarbon vapors. For wet chlorine and hydrochloric acid, Teflon lining or Hastelloy C22 is better.
Can thermal mass flow meters measure corrosive gas mass flow directly?
Yes. Thermal mass flow meters report mass flow without a separate pressure or temperature transmitter. They work well for gas flow in DN15 to DN100 pipes.
Can I use a Coriolis flow meter for chlorine gas?
Yes. A Coriolis meter with 316L or Hastelloy wetted parts works well for chlorine gas flow in kg/h. For wet chlorine, specify a Teflon lined option.
What output signal do Silver Instruments corrosive gas flow meters provide?
Standard options include 4-20 mA HART, pulse and RS485 Modbus. ATEX Zone 1 certification is available for hazardous gas areas.
