Horizontal Installation Rules for Liquid and Gas Lines

For a horizontal pipe run, the first rule is to avoid a partially filled pipe. In a water or chemical line, mount the meter in a low point or use a downstream backpressure valve to keep the pipe full. For an electromagnetic flow meter, keep the two electrodes in a horizontal plane, near the 3 and 9 position. Never place them at the top or bottom. A top electrode catches air bubbles. A bottom electrode catches sludge. For a DN50 electromagnetic flow meter on a raw water line, 10D upstream straight run and 5D downstream straight run gives stable measurement.


For a Coriolis mass flow meter in a horizontal chemical dosing line, orientation depends on the vendor. Some models require the split tubes facing downward so the tubes drain fully when the line stops. Other models need the tubes upward to avoid solids settling. The pipe stayed full and the signal settled within 0.5 percent of the reference.


Do not install a liquid flow meter in a vertical downward line. Gravity can drain the pipe faster than the pump fills it. The meter may see an empty pipe and trigger a fault. If you must measure downward flow, place a backpressure valve below the meter. Use empty pipe detection settings if the transmitter supports them.


For oval gear flow meters on diesel or heavy fuel oil, vertical upward flow is acceptable if the fluid is clean. These meters need a strainer upstream. A 200 mesh strainer for diesel and a 100 mesh strainer for heavy oil will protect the gears. For a DN15 to DN50 electromagnetic flow meter, use 10D upstream and 5D downstream. For vortex flow meters on steam, use 15D upstream and 5D downstream when there is one elbow. If there are two elbows in different planes, use 30D upstream. For Coriolis mass flow meters, straight run is less critical but pipe strain is a bigger risk. Support the pipe on both sides of a Coriolis meter so the meter body does not carry the pipe weight.


Do not install a magnetic flow meter near a pump suction because air release and swirl cause reading noise.
